Information

My final act as principal at Richard Bulpitt is this newsletter…

I hope you all have had a relaxing and adventurous break, Bulldogs families. I can’t take credit for any exciting adventures myself, though I can now recommend the Vancouver Maritime Museum and the RCMP Vessel St. Roch wholeheartedly. It has been a pleasure and a privilege working with all of you these past 5-½ years, and I will miss you all. See you soon.

Welcome, to our newest Bulldog!

Congratulations and welcome to our newest addition to the Bulldogs family. Last week, Ms. Paradis welcomed her baby boy, Macksen to the world. Please join us in congratulating her and welcoming our newest Bulldog.

Welcome back, Ms. Morzo

Please welcome back Ms. Morzo, who will be taking over for Ms. Paradis for the rest of the year. Some of you will recognize here, as she worked with Ms. Semeschuk’s class for January and February.

A message from Mr. Bako

Dear Richard Bulpitt Elementary School Community,

I am very excited to introduce myself as the new Principal of Richard Bulpitt Elementary. I am honoured to join this vibrant and dynamic community on the Willoughby Slope.

First off, I’d like to recognize Mr. Oliver for his leadership and care over the past years at RBE. He and I were both assigned to our schools, mine being RC Garnett, at the same time, so I can fully appreciate how difficult it is to see him move on. I have known Mr. Oliver for many years now and know him to be an excellent educator and leader. In my conversations with him these past few weeks, as we prepared for our transition, his passion and dedication for this community is immense. I am grateful to come to a school so well cared for.

For myself, I have spent these past 6 years working just down the road. The Willoughby slope is very familiar to me, but we all know it is continuously expanding and new challenges come our way daily. I have come to admire the community that exists here and know that the connection of families to their neighbourhood school is vital. I look forward to continuing the connections that already exist and to nurture new ones.

With a passion for education and a commitment to fostering a nurturing and inclusive environment, I am excited to work alongside dedicated staff, enthusiastic students, and supportive families that make Richard Bulpitt so special. My goal is to build on the school’s strong foundation and continue to create a space where every student feels valued, challenged, and inspired.

Throughout my career, I have always believed in the power of collaboration and open communication. I look forward to getting to know each of you and learning about your unique perspectives and experiences. Together, we can create an environment that encourages curiosity, creativity, love for learning and maybe have some fun along the way too.

Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, ideas, or concerns. My door is always open, and I am eager to hear from you. I am confident that, together, we can achieve wonderful things and make each school year memorable and successful for all.

I am excited to embark on this journey with you and look forward to meeting you all soon.

Warm regards,

Mr. Zoltan Bako
Incoming Principal
Richard Bulpitt Elementary

Please be scent-aware

We’d like to remind everyone that we have some staff and students with sensitivities to scented products. While we mostly have no problems in this regard, there have been a couple of occasions recently where someone had enough scented product on to trigger a reaction. Please minimize your use of scented products, to help us keep everyone safe. After all ‘Take care of each other’ is one of our three simple rules.

Concert Tickets

Our Spring Concerts will be fast upon us in April, with K-2 students performing at 1:30 and 6:00 on Tuesday, April 8, and grade 3-5 students performing at 1:30 and 6:00 on Thursday, April 10. Tickets can be booked on School Cash Online starting Monday March 10. Please note that we are limiting initial ticket availability for the evening shows to two per family. The evening concerts always ‘sell out’ and we want to allow as many families as possible to be able to attend. If we have a surplus as the show dates approach, we will release more tickets.

Thank you to all families who make sure that their kids are here to share for the evening concert, even if they aren’t attending themselves. Everything works, looks and sounds better with a full cast of performers.

Something to read

  • Have a look at these Stop Motion animation projects completed by some of our grade 5s! You have to watch carefully to see what’s going on, but it’s worth the attention!
  • I stopped in my tracks when I read this bit on embracing your own personal ‘geekiness’ from Sketchplanations:
Are you passionate about something? Do you know something inside out where others barely give it a glance?
As a schoolboy, I thought I was into birds—until my dad and I stayed with some family friends who were truly into birding. They had a powerful telescope trained on the birds at the feeder in their garden. They had crystal-clear binoculars we used on a bird walk, which showed me birds clearer and closer than I’d ever seen. They knew what birds to look for and had tape recordings of specific bird calls that brought them to nearby bushes. They talked us through trips they’d been around the world to spot rare and remarkable birds.
Spending time with them changed how I saw birds forever. It was impossible to be around them and not start to love birds.
There are classic disciplines for geekiness: science, maths, computers, birdwatching, plane spotting, model trains. But over the years, I’ve seen people geek out about so much more: gardening, plants, pottery, DJ’ing, Pokemon, sport, skiing, cycling, endurance, beekeeping, writing, business, spreadsheets, coding, magic tricks, sailing, a musical instrument, nightclubs, restaurants, personal development, gaming, crypto, cooking, travel, film, thrillers, local history, deals, football boots, coaching, shopping, clothes, cars, building, cameras, art, museums, relationships, pets, insects, decorating, and on and on.
If you don’t pay close attention to Premier League, football is boring, but if you follow every detail, it can be engrossing. I didn’t think much of textiles, but I found it fascinating after spending an afternoon weaving in Laos.
One of the 5 Ways to Wellbeing is Take Notice. Being a geek is noticing everything about something. It can also Connect you with others and keep you Learning—two more of the five.
The word geek derives from a word meaning fool or freak, as if it’s foolish to devote so much attention and time to one area. But the truth is, as the physicist Richard Feynman says, “Nearly everything is really interesting if you go into it deeply enough.” And the writer Henry Miller wrote, “the moment one gives close attention to anything, even a blade of grass, it becomes a mysterious, awesome, indescribably magnificent world in itself.”
Let’s embrace our inner geeks. Dive deep into what fascinates you. Try not to dismiss others’ passions until you’ve had a go at getting into depth yourself. Their joy could be just the same that you feel with something else.
Everyone’s a geek about something. And that’s wonderful.
Below is a revised and expanded version of my original sketch, which had just a few passions. I’ve thought about it so much since I first heard the phrase—I couldn’t remember where—that I thought it needed an update. And we had a blast talking about this on the recent podcast.

  • For a completely unrealistic, April plan, look below. I’m planning to pick 2, and go for it!
