Information
Driveway
As the weather gets wetter and colder, more families seem to start driving to school. The result of this is cars double-parked across the yellow line, other cars blocked in, and worse behaviours still! This is inconsiderate and dangerous, and it would prevent emergency vehicles from accessing the school, as they are much wider than the private cars that manage to sneak by. If your car is across the yellow line, DO NOT LEAVE IT! At pick-up time, in particular, If your child is not yet out of class and ready to get straight into the car, drive through and go around. Our staff are not here to enforce courtesy amongst grown-ups, and as a community where we take care of each other (that’s rule 2 of our 4), we should not have to do so. Please be courteous and safe, and park only against the curb.
Even better, please walk to school for drop-off and pick-up. A bit of exercise in the morning helps learning, less vehicle traffic is safer and walking doesn’t pollute (even electric cars leave stuff like tire and brake dust in their wake) the way cars do. Given that Mr. Oliver will give pedestrians right-of-way over cars in the driveway, walking might well be quicker, too, particularly when things get busy.
Thank you very much to the many, many Bulldogs who do commute to the school under their own power. Well done!
‘The Rules’
Speaking of the rules, Mr. Oliver doesn’t love rules. He loves respectful, community-minded choices that aren’t microscopically listed out. To keep things simple this year, we talked at our first assembly about needing only four rules to function well together:
- Be safe.
- Take care of each other.
- Take care of your school.
- Take care of your learning.
Please take a moment to talk with your kids about what any of those rules looks like, and doesn’t look like. They can definitely tell you.

West Coast Recess
Here at RBE, we’re tougher than rain! Well, mostly, we know that a bit of rain doesn’t hurt us, and that getting out into the fresh air, and moving our bodies during the day helps learning. Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather forecast each day, and that they have a spare change of clothes (even the grade 5s), as we go out in pretty much all conditions. Only thunder & lightning, torrential rain, or dangerous conditions keep us in. Otherwise, we’re out frolicking!
The Terry Fox Run
Our school is proud to take part in this year’s Terry Fox School Run. Please help us to continue the legacy of one of Canada’s greatest heroes, by donating to support cancer research, while building fantastic school spirit. We will be collecting ‘Toonies for Terry’ all week, along with the online donation options. Our Fundraising Goal is $5000.00
Ways to donate:
- School Cash Online
- Through the Terry Fox Foundation’s School Run Page
- ‘Toonies for Terry’ – We will be collecting toonies at school on September 20th, 21st, and 22nd
Our Terry Fox Run will take place on Thursday September 22nd in the afternoon.
1:15 – 1:45 Grade 3-5 Run (running around the school and the field)
1:45 – 2:15 K-2 Run (running around the field)
This event will happen rain or shine and everyone is encouraged to participate either by running or walking around the route. Parents/Guardians are welcome to join us for this event. You can cheer on the field or choose to walk or run with us. To keep the course for our event safe, the entrance and exit to our school driveway will be closed from lunchtime until the end of the run. Adults who are planning to join us are encouraged to park on the surrounding streets or walk.
Food & Celebrations
If your child is celebrating a birthday, we would ask that you please not send edible treats for the class. Non-edible things (fancy pencils and similar) are fine, but cupcakes or similar take significant time to hand out, exclude our several diabetic students, introduce potential allergens, and aren’t particularly healthy for anyone. We thank you for your cooperation.
Meet the Teacher
This Wednesday, from 5-6, is our Meet the Teacher event. Classrooms (excepting Kindergarten) will be open from 5-6 for you to meet your child’s new teacher, see the space, and hear about class plans and priorities for the year. You can also find Mr. Oliver floating around (it’s so nice not to have to stay in the office for distancing.
The Music Room is also open during “Meet the Teacher” night. Please drop by and meet Ms. Knuttila and have your children experiment with some instruments. The theme of Music this year is, “Our Musical World.” We would love for you to the music from your culture so that Ms. Knuttila can pass it on to our students. Ms. Knuttila’s goal is to have at least one song from each language spoken by our students, and she needs your help!

Something to Read or Watch…

Harvard University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Image by Rebecca Clements.
I don’t normally like to share out scary things, but I came across this article from Harvard on smartphone addiction. It’s terrifying, really, and I can see components of my own experience clearly in what the writers talk about: the phantom buzz in a pocket, the hyper-connectedness, the ‘rewards.’ It is a quick read (if you ignore the comments, and worth the small investment of time. And of course, there are hints that perhaps will help with decisions around our own phone use and whether to get smartphones for our kids. Dopamine, Smartphones and You: The Battle for Your Time. Ironically, it was my twitter feed that pointed me to the article. Sigh!
The Minister of Education and the education partner groups have released this joint statement in support of SOGI. “B.C.’s K-12 curriculum includes a focus on valuing diversity and respecting differences, as well as human rights and responses to discrimination. Students deserve to have the complete support of teachers, administrators, support staff, trustees, parents, guardians, caregivers and their community, as we work together to create learning environments where all students are free from discrimination so they can thrive and succeed in their school years and beyond.”
