Reunification Forms
We sent home reunification forms last week. These contain information required for us to release students in a controlled, safe manner in the event of a major disaster like an earthquake. If you have not already done so, please take some time to fill them out and return them. The information they contain overlaps a bit with what we already have, but it also includes a critical extra category – who are the nearby adults you’d allow to pick up your kids in the event you were stuck on the wrong side of a bridge or similar. Likewise, whose kids could you offer to pick up and get inside, safe, and comfortable in the event of a big emergency. The sooner we have these back, the better. To everyone who has already completed and returned a form, thank you very much.
Power Outages
Please note that power outages do NOT immediately result in students being sent home and school cancelled, as service is often restored quite quickly. When the power goes out, we adjust our activities to work by natural light and without internet. We do have an emergency phone line that is not dependent on internet connectivity to work, and we use that line for outgoing calls. There are emergency lights throughout the school, including in washrooms, stairwell, and hallways. If the power goes out, please rest assured that we are keeping your children safe, cozy and learning, and unless we call to advise otherwise, students would be picked up at the normal time.

Something to Read or Watch…
- One of our school goals is to improve students’ writing – both in quality and variety of ideas, and technically. Here’s an article with 7 ways you can help your child’s writing, too. 7 Great Ways to Encourage Your Child’s Writing.
- You probably receive suggestions from teachers to play math games with your kid, and you’ve probably received some of those from your child’s teachers over the years (or you will). You can also find math learning in lots of commercial board games too. Here’s a list of an even dozen. We particularly like Yahtzee at home for my daughter’s needs at mental math fluency.
- This is an American graph, but it’s probably not far off from what we experience here in Canada as well. It gave me some things to think about, too.
- Here are the takeaways from Sahil Bloom (who pointed me at it in the first place:
- Family time is limited—cherish it.
- Friend time is limited—prioritize real ones.
- Partner time is significant—never settle.
- Children time is precious—be present.
- Coworker time is significant—find energy.
- Alone time is highest—love yourself.
