News and Information

Earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria

After the devastating earthquake in Türkiye and Syria, we are saddened by the loss of life and future hardships of the people in both countries, and empathize with our community members whose roots are in those countries. We are hoping to set up our own fundraising link on Tuesday, but I just learned that until this Wednesday, the Government of Canada is matching all donations to the Canadian Red Cross’ fundraising appeal. This is where I’d be routing our donations anyhow, and I can’t issue tax receipts for donations, so if you want to help the earthquake victims, this is a time-sensitive chance to double your impact.

Diversity and Respect Week is February 21-24

During Diversity and Respect Week, please note that we will have a Rainbow Day on Tuesday February 21 and Pink Shirt Day is Wednesday February 22. And of course, Multicultural Day is Friday February 24.

Multicultural Day

This Friday is Multicultural Day, and we are so excited. Thank you to the teams of parents, staff, family members, and students who are working hard to make this day of celebration and learning come true. And huge props to the two groups of students, and solo second-grader, who will be performing at the closing assembly.

Celebrating Mother Language Day in Langley Schools

Group of Children Around the World

The District is recognizing the United Nation’s International Mother Language Day (February 21st) by sharing helpful resources with students and their families. As part of the District’s ongoing goal to celebrate diversity and inclusion, we are sharing these online resources with families to help promote literacy at home, no matter what language is spoken.

Unite for Literacy provides free digital access to picture books, narrated in many languages. Watch an instructional video here.

Storybooks Canada is a free open educational resource that promotes literacy and language learning in homes, schools, and communities. Watch an instructional video here.

For more information, please visit the District webpage here.

WGSS Survey

So I got an email today from some students at WGSS who are surveying residents of Willoughby for the upcoming IDEAx summit about life in our region.

We are a team of students from Walnut Grove Secondary School, currently partaking in a district-wide competition called IdeaX, a research based project for empowering innovative young minds to design a potential “Future Langley” that could exist in 50 years.

We are reaching out to collect advice from citizens of Willoughby to better understand the opinions of others’ on what they want to see in the future. It will be greatly appreciated if you could forward our survey to the guardians of the children attending Richard Bulpitt for us to receive data.

The survey will take approximately 2-4 minutes, and is completely anonymous.

Possible Program Expansion at U-Connect

Is your child in need of an education program that offers more flexibility and continues to meet their educational needs? U-Connect is inviting students and families to see if a full-time, home-based online learning program for students in grades 1-7 is right for them. U-Connect is gathering feedback to explore the potential of a new program that is 100 per cent home-based and online, offering a more flexible schedule and environment that is tailored to a student’s learning style, and allowing more time for their extracurricular passions. Interested students and their families are encouraged to complete an Expression of Interest online form here. To learn more, visit this webpage here.

PAC Update

Pink Shirt Day + Donut Day – Wednesday, February 22

This year, the PAC is combining Pink Shirt Day and Donut Day for a special fundraiser that benefits the broader community. We’re selling Pink Vanilla Dip and Chocolate Dip donuts with sprinkles from Gourmet donuts after school in the courtyard!

Donuts are $3 each or $15 for 6. Cash and card will be accepted!

All proceeds from the sale of pink donuts after school on February 22 will go to the CKNW Kid’s Fund. The fund supports children’s healthy self-esteem by teaching empathy, compassion, and kindness.

Visit PinkShirtDay.ca for details on Pink Shirt Day.

Spring Fling Meeting – Monday, February 27

Join the Spring Fling committee and have your say on February 27 at 4:30pm. We will meet in person at the front doors of the schools. We will take a walk around the school, look at the activities/vendors/etc. and try to figure out the best placement for everything. We need to spread things out, find more space for line-ups, and make doubles of things like ticket booths.

Kiddos welcome!

Quote(s) of the week

Something to Read or Watch…

  • Did you know that a group of Black American soldiers were absolutely critical to building one of BC’s most important highways? And the did it, as you might guess, with minimal support and insufficient tools. Thanks to Dawson Creek Principal, Shaun Henry for sharing this with me.
  • You probably already know about the history of Pink Shirt Day, but maybe not. In case you don’t, this CBC Kids video does a very nice job of explaining the history, and the purpose, of Pink Shirt Day. And remember, it isn’t really about the shirt. It’s about being true to yourself and, more importantly, letting everyone around you be true to themselves too. Thanks to Ms. Wolstenholme for sharing.
  • Happy Family Day!
