Information

Ramadan Mubarak - DeGroote School of Business

Ramadan begins Monday. For Muslim people all over the world, Ramadan is a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, community. Adult Muslims will fast from dawn to dusk all month, eating a predawn meal and breaking the day’s fast with a nightly feast that brings together family. Charity and prayer, are also prominent during Ramadan. [source: Wikipedia] To all of our community members who observe Ramadan, we wish you a Ramadan kareem.

Entrepreneur Fair

On Tuesday and Wednesday, our gym will turn into a shopping mall of sorts, as the grade 4s conduct their Entrepreneur Fair. The grade 4s thought up, designed, and produced products for sale (with part proceeds going to a charity of each student’s choice). All classes will have the opportunity to visit and shop, with all products priced under $10. These events give all students a chance to do a bit of math thinking (‘Do I have enough money? How much change will I get?’), and give the grade 4s a chance to experience entrepreneurship firsthand. Please watch for an indication from your classroom teacher of when kids will visit, and consider sending some toonies with your child so they can shop. Please don’t send large bills, though, as the vendors won’t be able to break large notes.

Congratulations Basketball Teams

Congratulations to our Bulldogs basketball players who had a fun season learning some of the ins and outs of the game. While we didn’t win every game, we got better each week, and we had fun. I am so proud of the players who stretched themselves and came out to play. Well done, all of you, and best of luck in your game against the staff ‘team’ on Thursday.

Modular Expansion Project Update

You will see some pretty remarkable changes at RBE over the break. Portables 1, 2, 5, and 6 will be moved over the break to their new (temporary) home on the site of the hockey box, and groundwork will begin on the site of our new modular expansion. You will see construction fencing up in a couple of locations. Please reinforce with your kids that the space inside is not safe, even if they come across an opening that looks sooooo interesting. Ms. Kalan-Gill’s, Miss Gard’s, and Ms. Cripps’ classes, along with the classes from the relocated portables, will be lining up in new spots after the break. The portable classes will, naturally, line up by the portables, and the other three on the basketball courts. If we have to move the remaining classes who line up by the outside staircase, we will do so once we see the final configuration of the construction fencing.

For those interested, plans and drawings of the expansion are on display in the display in the front hall of the school.

Spring Health info from Fraser Health

Health, safety, and wellness continue to be a priority in our schools. To help support our students and families, we are sharing important information from our community partner Fraser Health about Spring Health. Please see below for helpful tips to support your child.

Spring Health for Kids

The spring season is approaching which means warmer weather and more outdoor activities. It’s also an opportunity to foster new healthy habits for our children. Here are five practical tips for school-aged kids to make the most of this season.

Get active

Warmer weather makes spring the perfect time to get outside and play. Take a walk around your neighbourhood or head to a local park or hiking trail. You can also stay active close to home with some backyard jump rope or hopscotch.

Think fresh

Springtime often brings up images of fresh fruits and produce. Now is a great time to teach children about where food comes by helping them to start their own home garden. You don’t need a large space to get started. Strawberries, tomatoes and lettuce can all be grown from pots on a sundeck.

Be sun safe

Sun burns are possible even in spring. Use a sunscreen that has Sun Protection Factor (SPF) 30 or more. When possible, schedule outdoor activities in the morning or late afternoon and early evening. If you and your children are out in the sun during mid-day hours, wear long sleeves, loose-fitting long pants and a hat with a wide brim.

Support positive mental health

The best way to support positive mental health in your children is by forming strong and caring relationships with them. Make time for connection each day. Talk to them about their feelings and experiences.

Practice road safety

Biking is a great way to exercise and spend quality time with your family. Remember to keep safety top of mind. Protect their heads with a well-fitted helmet and teach them the rules of the road, such as the hand signals for stop, right and left-hand turns.

Please let us know if you are moving away

Parents are asked to inform the school as soon as possible if/when they know that their children will be leaving our school or not returning in the fall. Please complete our withdraw form and email it to  cdavies@sd35.bc.ca

Are you going to be away for an extended period?

Please complete the Student Missing School Time Form, if your student(s) are going to be away from school due to an extended vacation, or a family leave, and email it to  cdavies@sd35.bc.ca

Lost and Found

Check out the lost and found.  There is lots to see there, and there will be more each day the weather is warm enough for jackets to become a burden that must be dropped on the playground in the middle of recess. Unclaimed items will be donated on the last day of school before spring break.
