Summer Homework 2024
Learning isn’t all about letters or numbers or paper. It’s also about experiences and experiments. We’ve put together some summer ‘homework’ for all our Bulldogs, to inspire some adventures and some summer learning! Get out there, Bulldogs! See our website for a link-enabled version of this document.
- Read a book about someone who doesn’t look like you.
- Bake or cook a new recipe from a country you’ve never been to.
- Boss Level: Wet your feet in a stream, a lake, and the ocean, all on the same day!
- Build something from scratch without instructions or plans
- Climb a tree (safely, and with parent permission or accompaniment).
- Count 100 of something
- Do a family board game day.
- Find a geocache. https://www.geocaching.com/play
- Pick some blackberries. Eat at least one while it is warm from the sun. Pick enough to make jam. Make it. Enjoy it. Share it.
- Fix your own bike.
- Sleep in a tent, even if it’s only set up in the living room (but better if it can somehow be outside).
- Go cloud-watching or star-gazing.
- Go on a PNE (or similar) ride that scares you a bit!
- Go for a hike at a ski hill, just to see what they’re like in summer.
- Go for a walk, and make a point of saying ‘Hi’ (or good morning) to the people you meet. Keep track of their response.
- Go to 4 kinds of park or historic site: Municipal (Township), Regional (MetroVan or FVRD), Provincial, and National. There are some of each within minutes of our school, and lots in BC)
- Go to the (ocean) beach and find some things. Crabs under rocks. Fucus. Limpets. A Sand Dollar (if you’re lucky). Examine them and leave them where you found them. Find litter. Pick it up and get rid of it properly.
- Have a family picnic dinner at Tynehead Park in Surrey. The Serpentine Hollow Picnic Area is delightful.
- Have a screen-free weekend. Or (and?) an internet-free week!
- Jump in the deep end (or try some other new thing that scares you just a bit). Note: this doesn’t mean I think you should be a daredevil.
- Fix or repair something (ex. mend a hole, tighten some screws, etc.)
- (Parent discretion…) try every flavour of ice cream or gelato at a local business. Note: not all in one day!
- Learn a new card game.
- Make some Andy Goldsworthy-inspired art
- Pick up 5 pieces of litter that other people have stepped over.
- Ride your bike 5 days in a row. Wear a helmet for all of those, of course.
- Go fishing.
- Sit still and breathe deeply for 2 minutes a day.
- Visit a museum
- Sneak a happy poem into a friend’s mailbox or under their welcome mat.
- Draw, paint, photograph, or sculpt something!
- Keep a wildlife-spotting checklist (but do not approach). Many of these suggestions can be spotted right from the school, or in our own neighbourhood, especially if you’re an early riser. Others might only be spotted if you’re on a family driving trip; once you get out of the city, turn off those screens and look out the window! Before you think this is too hard, remember that Mr. Oliver has seen all of these but four within an hour of Langley.
- Harbour Seal
- River Otter (which I have seen more often in the ocean, actually)
- Coyote
- Raccoon (do not approach. These are mean, not lucky.)
- Black bear
- Bighorn Sheep
- Mountain goat
- Marmot or a Ground Squirrel
- Beaver
- Chipmunk
- Douglas Squirrel
- Bald Eagle
- Red Tailed Hawk
- Osprey
- Common Loon
- Northern Flicker
- Or any other kind of woodpecker
- Bufflehead (because the name is so cool)
- Sea anemone
- Sun Star
- Chiton
- Tell yourself that you’re awesome every day (because you are)!
