Information

Easter

Spring Break ends with Easter this year. Easter is the Christian celebration of the resurrection of Jesus, which the Bible describes as happening on the third day after his crucifixion. Families will gather at special celebrations that may be in the morning, or be late-night vigils. Beyond the religious aspects of Easter, families from many cultures and faiths will celebrate the Easter Bunny’s visit, finding treats and decorated eggs in the unlikeliest of places.

Holi

Last week was Holi, the traditional  Hindu celebration of Colours, Love and Spring. It celebrates the arrival of Spring in India and Nepal, the end of winter, and the blossoming of love.[18][25] It is also an invocation for a good spring harvest season.[18][25] It lasts for a night and a day, starting on the evening of the Purnima (full moon day) falling on the Hindu calendar month of Phalguna, which falls around the middle of March in the Gregorian calendar. This year, it was celebrated on March 24 (source: wikipedia). For an idea of the scope of the celebration, have a look at this photo-essay from The Atlantic, of this year’s celebrations in India. Wow!

Welcome & Welcome Back

Please join me in welcoming back Ms. Harrison to Kindergarten, as she returns from her maternity leave. Ms. Mueller will be staying on with that class for a couple of days a week as well. We also welcome back Ms. Turner to the Resource department, and welcome on Mr. Nam who will stay with us to the end of the year. We also welcome Ms. Little to the Bulldogs community, working with ELL students a couple of days a week. Woo hoo!

Family Smart

Family Smart is a provincial organization that supports families whose kids deal with mental health or substance use difficulties. They presented recently to the PAC general meeting and shared this video with us. Now I’m sharing it with you. It doesn’t have anything specific to do with us as a whole community, but I found it too powerful not to share.

Spring Health info from Fraser Health

Health, safety, and wellness continue to be a priority in our schools. To help support our students and families, we are sharing important information from our community partner Fraser Health about Spring Health. Please see below for helpful tips to support your child.

Spring Health for Kids

The spring season is approaching which means warmer weather and more outdoor activities. It’s also an opportunity to foster new healthy habits for our children. Here are five practical tips for school-aged kids to make the most of this season.

Get active

Warmer weather makes spring the perfect time to get outside and play. Take a walk around your neighbourhood or head to a local park or hiking trail. You can also stay active close to home with some backyard jump rope or hopscotch.

Think fresh

Springtime often brings up images of fresh fruits and produce. Now is a great time to teach children about where food comes by helping them to start their own home garden. You don’t need a large space to get started. Strawberries, tomatoes and lettuce can all be grown from pots on a sundeck.

Be sun safe

Sun burns are possible even in spring. Use a sunscreen that has Sun Protection Factor (SPF) 30 or more. When possible, schedule outdoor activities in the morning or late afternoon and early evening. If you and your children are out in the sun during mid-day hours, wear long sleeves, loose-fitting long pants and a hat with a wide brim.

Support positive mental health

The best way to support positive mental health in your children is by forming strong and caring relationships with them. Make time for connection each day. Talk to them about their feelings and experiences.

Practice road safety

Biking is a great way to exercise and spend quality time with your family. Remember to keep safety top of mind. Protect their heads with a well-fitted helmet and teach them the rules of the road, such as the hand signals for stop, right and left-hand turns.

Quote(s) of the week

Something to read (or watch)…

  • I won’t be dishonest and say I am sad that April Fools’ Day is not on a school day this year (we have a few jokesters among us, you know). And reflecting on April Fools’ Day, I realized that I don’t actually know why it exists, so I looked. Here’s the real story. It’s complex and long.
  • For those in our community who are ‘car people’ (I know I’m not the only one), check this out. These were wretched cars to drive, apparently, but they made fantastic posters, and were the stuff of 16-year-old Mr. Oliver dreams.
