Information
Thank you/Welcome back!
It’s bittersweet this weekend, as we say ‘thank you and goodbye’ to Ms. Hufsmith who has been working with our students in the gym since the start of the year. She has made a quick and positive impression on all of us. That’s the sad part. We also get to be happy, though, as we’re welcoming back Ms. Burns who will be taking over in that role.
Election
On Saturday October 19th many of our school gyms across the District will be used as provincial election polling stations from 8am – 8pm. As guided by Section 81 of the Election Act “accommodation in a school that is the property of a board of school trustees under the School Act must be made available by the board for use as a voting place.” Please take note of extra pedestrian and vehicle traffic in the area of these sites on election day.
The District appreciates the support and cooperation from families and members of our community. The District is encouraging everyone who is eligible to do their civic duty and vote. For a list of school sites being used, visit the District website here.
Our older students will be participating in the Student Vote as part of the lead-up. I always find it interesting that the results we get from that vote can’t be shared until after the election, as they could be seen as the kind of poll that might actually impact how the real deal turns out. Parents, don’t forget to vote yourselves, and take your kids to experience it. I’m proud to say that my youngest will be voting in her first election this year!
Willoughby Slope Boundary Catchments Information Sessions
The District has completed more than half of the planned Willoughby Slope boundary catchments information sessions. If you were not able to attend a meeting in-person but would like to learn and engage in the process, you can watch a recording of the presentation or review the slides. This information can be found on the District website here. Families are encouraged to provide suggestions by emailing: feedback@sd35.bc.ca
Emergency Procedures & Response
Health and safety are a priority in the Langley School District. Schools follow emergency procedures to ensure students, staff, and any visitors in our schools or sites are safe when unexpected incidents or events happen. At the start of every school year, administrators, teachers, and staff review these emergency procedures. Schools practice a set number of drills annually in preparation for unexpected situations. The District encourages families to become familiar with these staff emergency procedures and the drills that are completed in schools. You can read them in the Staff Emergency Procedures Poster here or find them posted in areas throughout District buildings. If you have questions or concerns about emergency procedures, please contact your child’s teacher or principal.
Student in Distress and School Safety
Health and safety are a priority in the Langley School District. Our schools follow emergency procedures to help keep students, staff, and the community safe. Depending on the situation, communication to parents/caregivers is needed to keep families informed about incidents in our school, such as during lockdowns, hold & secures, and room clears. Sometimes these incidents may not be emergencies but are medical crises. It is important to note that the decision to send communications to families is dependent on a variety of factors including the nature of what happened, who has witnessed or was directly impacted by what happened, as well as student and staff privacy. Although communication is unique and dependent on the specific situation, there are times when a student is in distress and the incident may require a message or letter to families. In addition to communication to parents/caregivers, teachers and staff may debrief with students after an incident that may have upset them. In some cases, the school counsellor may offer support to students in need. As always, we want families to let us know if your child requires support. If you have any questions or concerns about communication related to emergencies or incidents, please reach out to the school.
Fair Notice – Threat making behaviour
The Langley School District is committed to a safe and supportive environment for all. Our schools take all threatening comments and behaviours seriously. Our schools follow procedures when responding to threat-making behaviour to help keep students, staff, and the community safe. The following resource here outlines what information students and families need to know in relation to how the District responds to threat-making behaviour in our schools. Everyone has a role in helping keep our students safe. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your school administrator.

Something to read
- One morning as I was driving to work, I heard about Fat Bear Week. With a name like that, I had to check it out. Explore.org pointed me to a set of cameras aimed at feeding Brown Bears at Katmai National Park in Alaska. Viewers voted for the best weight-gaining bear of the year. The bears are winding down for this season, but if you check quickly, you might find some to watch, and even if you don’t, there are highlight reels you can watch. It’s all pretty cool.

I also love that the same website points us to a bunch more live wildlife cameras around the globe.
Finally, I found out about Ocean Networks Canada who have a number of live deep-water webcams available, though they only stream for 5 minutes per hour, so you have to click in at the right time. In addition to those live cams, they have some highlight and learning videos too.
- It’s salmon spawning season, and the Pacific Salmon Foundation thinks we should all go out to see salmon spawning this year (I agree!). To help with that quest, they’ve made this clickable map to help us find places where we might see some salmon at the end of their life cycle. One thing I think is really cool is that one of the points is at McClughan Park, quite close to our school. While the map offers no guarantees, it does point us in what I know is the right direction. For what it’s worth, when I was running at Tynehead Park (also on the map) last weekend, I didn’t manage to see any fish. I was above the hatchery and fish gate, though, so the run might still be held up at the gate. When the volunteers are in working, that hatchery is usually open to the public and it is well worth a visit.
