Information

Halloween Dance

Many thanks to the excellent team of parent volunteers who put on a fun Halloween Dance on Friday. It was an enormous amount of often-stressful work that they did so the community could enjoy some time together. Thanks, too, to the custodial staff who have their work schedules significantly disrupted by these events, and who clean up after us without complaint.

Photo Retakes

Lifetouch will be here to do photo retakes on Tuesday of this week. We’re sorry it has taken so long for us to receive the proofs. We are looking at another (local) company for photos next year.

Remembrance Day Poppies

It is a long-standing tradition for schools to support our veterans and the efforts of the Royal Canadian Legion. Once again this year, our school will be receiving a poppy for every student and distributing them to classes. We will continue to collect funds this year in support of the Legion’s Poppy Campaign but kindly ask students and their families to donate online via School Cash Online. Please do not send cash or cheques with your child to school.

We appreciate your generosity. As always, our school is committed to educating our community about the meaning of the poppy and Remembrance Day.

Information About School Status During Inclement weather

Snow closures and power outages are an annual occurrence in Langley School District. So, where do you go to get information about the status of schools during periods of inclement weather? If you are able to access the internet via computer or smartphone, current information about Langley schools can be accessed on all school websites or www.sd35.bc.ca. Updates are also posted to Twitter @LangleySchools and Facebook at www.facebook.com/langleyschooldistrict. If you don’t have internet connectivity but your phone is working, call a relative or friend in an area that has not been affected by the storm and ask them to check the district website for you. Local radio stations are also informed of school status in Langley. Tune in to CKWX 1130AM, CKNW 980AM, Country Radio 107.1FM, Pulse 107.7 or CBC 690AM or 88.1FM for updates.

Please note that Langley District schools are all considered ‘open’ until a decision to close is required. Decisions on school closures are usually made by 6:30am. As always, it is a parent’s decision whether to send their child to school based on safety and individual circumstances. If you feel it is unsafe for you or your child to travel to or attend an open school for any reason, please keep your child home and report an absence to the school.

Power Outages

Please note that power outages do NOT immediately result in students being sent home and school cancelled, as service is often restored quite quickly. When the power goes out, we adjust our activities to work by natural light and without internet. We do have an emergency phone line that is not dependent on internet connectivity to work, and we use that line for outgoing calls. There are emergency lights throughout the school, including in washrooms, stairwell, and hallways. If the power goes out, please rest assured that we are keeping your children safe, cozy and learning, and unless we call to advise otherwise, students would be picked up at the normal time.

Country Bumkins Openings

Country Bumkins have a few openings in their before and after school care program at Richard Bulpitt. The fee is $610 per month. If you would like more information please call JOhn at 604-499-4838 or e-mail office@countrybumkins.net

Sick is sick

We are starting to notice an increase in the number of students coming to school visibly ill, and complaining of having not felt well since the moment they got up. Please note that, while COVID restrictions are not what they were, it is still expected that students who are ill should not be attending school. They can’t learn, they suffer physically and emotionally, and they increase the likelihood of other students and staff falling ill as well. If your children are sick, please keep them home.

Halloween is coming!

On Monday, October 31, we will have our Halloween Costume Parade in the gym. Students are welcome to wear their Halloween costumes that day, but with a couple of limitations. Students (and staff) should not bring replica weapons as part of their costume, even for the parade. We would also ask our older students to keep in mind that there are little kids here, so extra-scary costumes should be saved for trick-or-treating and not worn to school. Students may wear masks during the actual parade, but we would like to see their faces during instruction and at recess, so masks will be put away after the parade. Finally, we recommend that students with particularly elaborate or delicate costumes not wear them except for the parade. We don’t want to see anything ruined by accident.

As you have heard from your classroom teachers, we are asking parents NOT to send edible treats for whole classes on Halloween. The children will have ample opportunity to accumulate a collection of sugary treats while Trick-or-Treating Monday night. Non-edible treats would be allowed, but are certainly not an expectation or a requirement.

Have a safe and happy Halloween.

Quote(s) of the week

Something to Read or Watch…

  • You never know when you might need the right word to describe a group of animals.
  • From the Ministry of Public Safety: “To ensure B.C.’s trick-or-treaters do not get an unintended surprise this Halloween, parents and caregivers should be alert and check their little ghost’s or goblin’s candy and treats to ensure no cannabis products were accidentally handed out.” See the full article here.
