Information
In case you missed it
Just in case you didn’t see the letter Mr. Oliver sent out last week about the expansion that is coming to RBE, here it is again. We’re excited to be first at this interesting and exciting new way of creating space for kids to learn. Mr. Oliver will share information as it becomes available, though right now, he doesn’t know any more about it than what’s in the letter.
‘Tis the season
We guarantee this won’t be about what you expect. It’s head lice season again. Mr. Oliver remembers being in elementary school (in Ontario) and having countless lice checks and schoolwide rules to help reduce the chances of lice moving between kids at school. We had our toques in the sleeves of our coats, never shared hats or coats, and checked for lice weekly (or more) at home. As we move into the season of toques on heads, please pay attention to your children’s hair. Particularly with older kids who take responsibility for their own hygiene, head lice can have a bit of free rein before they are detected. This document from the Ministry of Health has information on head lice that some families might find helpful.
Food Programs – Donation & Need
Did you know that the Langley School District Foundation has the singular purpose of supporting Langley students? It helps us provide food to families in need of a bit of support. You can join in the work by donating here. And if you are in need of support, a quick message to Ms. Arora, (Child & Youth Care Worker), Ms. Davies, Ms. Espin or Mr. Oliver will start things rolling. Things are tough and expensive these days, but help is available.
Remembrance Day Poppies
It is a long-standing tradition for schools to support our veterans and the efforts of the Royal Canadian Legion. Once again, this year, our school will be receiving a poppy for every student and distributing them to classes for our Remembrance Day assembly.
We appreciate your generosity. As always, our school is committed to educating our community about the meaning of the poppy and Remembrance Day. Thank you for your continued support of the Legion’s Poppy Campaign!
Families can donate online here or drop off donations in the office.
Spring Concert
We are formally announcing that we will be doing a school-wide Spring Concert again this year, rather than one in December. This decision is not taken lightly, and is based on a number of factors:
- Winter (Christmas) concerts come at a challenging and busy time of year, and demand 6 weeks of students’ precious music class time (they only get 40 minutes a week) for an event that isn not actually part of the music curriculum.
- The Christmasy nature of winter concerts (even though it is ‘Santa Christmas’ and not ‘Christian Christmas’ that is the focus) excludes numerous families who do not celebrate Christmas in any form. As a multicultural celebration of our entire year of music learning, the spring revue allows a much more diverse repertoire to be shared, and is more inclusive of our school’s vibrant and diverse community.
- In our school, historically, the evening Christmas Concert has seen participation rates as low as 30% in some classes, resulting in a bit of a substandard experience for performers and audience. Our last two spring concerts have seen much, much wider student participation in the evening show, resulting in a better show and a more positive experience for the students.
We are excited to be planning ahead for another ‘world tour’ of our musical learning this spring, and are looking forward to sharing it with you.
Something to read or watch…
Parents of our older kids (and maybe the young ones too), look at the pattern below with your child. What number is missing? What strategy did you use to find out?
It’s a fast-paced world. That’s what makes it so critical to slow down sometimes. Deliberately. And not just in the driveway. This article by Carl Honoré who wrote the book In Praise of Slow, shares 6 multicultural practices that encourage a brain speed break.
